A rat in Tommy's house might eat Tommy's ice cream--the spelling of arithmetic.

HOMES=The Great Lakes (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior)

On the subject of personal techniques, I've often found that remembering the number of items I need to recall is sufficient and lets me retrieve the whole list.

Like Lisa G., there's Roy G. Biv (Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo, Violet). There's also a manual mnemonic for the number of days in each month: form two fists and put them side-by-side. Knuckles represent months with 31 days, spaces between knuckles are months with fewer days.
